BNSS Section 169 — Information of design to commit cognizable offences

Summary

If a police officer learns that someone is planning to commit a serious crime that can be arrested without a warrant, the officer must share that information with their superior officer. The officer must also tell any other officer whose job is to stop such crimes or take legal action against them.

Official Text

Every police officer receiving information of a design to commit any cognizable offence shall communicate such information to the police officer to whom he is subordinate, and to any other officer whose duty it is to prevent or take cognizance of the commission of any such offence.
