As the section puts it: “shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both”

Summary

If a person intentionally causes physical pain or injury to someone else, they can be punished under this law. The punishment can be imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to one thousand rupees, or both. This rule does not apply in situations covered by section 334 of the same law.

Official Text

Whoever, except in the case provided for by section 334, voluntarily causes hurt, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to one year, or with fine which may extend to one thousand rupees, or with both.
