As the section puts it: “shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both”

Summary

If a person intentionally causes physical injury to a public servant who is doing their official duty, or if the injury is caused to stop that public servant or any other public servant from doing their duty, or because of something the public servant lawfully did or tried to do as part of their duty, that person can be punished. The punishment may be imprisonment for up to three years, or a fine, or both.

Official Text

Whoever voluntarily causes hurt to any person being a public servant in the discharge of his duty as such public servant, or with intent to prevent or deter that person or any other public servant from discharging his duty as such public servant, or in consequence of anything done or attempted to be done by that person in the lawful discharge of his duty as such public servant, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to three years, or with fine, or with both.
