Summary

The word "oath" covers not only a formal religious oath but also a solemn promise made without religious reference, if the law allows that instead. It also includes any statement that the law requires or permits you to make in front of a government official, or that is meant to be used as evidence, whether in a court or elsewhere.

The word “oath” includes a solemn affirmation substituted by law for an oath, and any declaration required or authorized by law to be made before a public servant or to be used for the purpose of proof, whether in a Court of Justice or not.
