IPC Section 57 — Fractions of terms of punishment

Summary

When calculating parts of a punishment term, a sentence of imprisonment for life is treated as equal to a sentence of twenty years in prison. This rule is used only for the purpose of working out fractions of the total punishment.

Official Text

In calculating fractions of terms of punishment, imprisonment for life shall be reckoned as equivalent to imprisonment for twenty years.
