Summary

This Act is officially named the Indian Contract Act, 1872. It applies to the entire country of India and came into effect on 1 September 1872.

The Act does not override any other existing law, regulation, or statute that it does not explicitly repeal. It also does not affect any trade usage or custom, nor any standard feature of a contract, as long as those are not inconsistent with what this Act provides.

Official Text

This Act may be called the Indian Contract Act, 1872. Extent, Commencement.—It extends to the whole of India 2[ 3***]; and it shall come into force on the first day of September, 1872. Saving—4*** Nothing herein contained shall affect the provisions of any Statute, Act or Regulation not hereby expressly repealed, nor any usage or custom of trade, nor any incident of any contract, not inconsistent with the provisions of this Act.
