Summary

A bailee who, as part of the bailment’s purpose, performs any work on the bailed goods that requires labour or skill has the right to keep those goods until they are paid for that work, unless there is an agreement stating otherwise. This right to hold the goods applies only when the service was provided in line with the bailment’s purpose, and it lasts until the bailee receives the proper payment for the services rendered.

Where the bailee has, in accordance with the purpose of the bailment, rendered any service involving the exercise of labour or skill in respect of the goods bailed, he has, in the absence of a contract to the contrary, a right to retain such goods until he receives due remuneration for the services he has rendered in respect of them.
