Summary

Sub-section (1) states that the official name of this law is the Information Technology Act, 2000.

Sub-section (2) says that the Act applies to the whole of India. It also says that, unless the Act says otherwise, it applies to any offence or contravention committed outside India by any person.

Sub-section (3) says that the Act comes into force on a date that the Central Government appoints through a notification. It also allows different dates to be appointed for different provisions of the Act, and any reference to the commencement of the Act in a provision is to be understood as the commencement of that specific provision.

Sub-section (4) says that the Act does not apply to documents or transactions that are listed in the First Schedule. It also provides that the Central Government may, through a notification in the Official Gazette, amend the First Schedule by adding or removing entries.

Sub-section (5) says that every notification issued under sub-section (4) must be laid before each House of Parliament.

Official Text

(1) This Act may be called the Information Technology Act, 2000.

(2) It shall extend to the whole of India and, save as otherwise provided in this Act, it applies also to any offence or contravention thereunder committed outside India by any person.

(3) It shall come into force on such date1 as the Central Government may, by notification, appoint and different dates may be appointed for different provisions of this Act and any reference in any such provision to the commencement of this Act shall be construed as a reference to the commencement of that provision. 2[

(4) Nothing in this Act shall apply to documents or transactions specified in the First Schedule:

Provided that the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, amend the First Schedule by way of addition or deletion of entries thereto.

(5) Every notification issued under sub-section (4) shall be laid before each House of Parliament.]
