Summary

Sub-section (1) gives the official name of this law, which is the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

Sub-section (2) states that this law applies across the entire country of India.

Sub-section (3) says that the law will start operating on a date chosen by the Central Government, which will announce this date through an official government notice. The government may set different start dates for different states, and whenever this law mentions its commencement, it means the date on which it actually started operating in that particular state.

Official Text

(1) This Act may be called the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

(2) It extends to the whole of India.

(3) It shall come into force on such date1 as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint; and different dates may be appointed for different States and any reference in this Act to the commencement of this Act shall, in relation to a State, be construed as a reference to the coming into force of this Act in that State.
