Summary

Sub-section (1) makes it illegal for anyone to work as a conductor of a stage carriage (a public bus) unless they hold a valid conductor's licence that specifically allows them to do that job. It also makes it illegal for anyone to hire or allow an unlicensed person to work as a conductor of a stage carriage.

Sub-section (2) allows a State Government to set out conditions under which the rule in sub-section (1) will not apply. These conditions can cover two situations: a driver of a stage carriage who is also performing the duties of a conductor, and a person hired to act as a conductor for a period of no more than one month.

(1) No person shall act as a conductor of a stage carriage unless he holds an effective conductor’s licence issued to him authorising him to act as such conductor; and no person shall employ or permit any person who is not so licensed to act as a conductor of a stage carriage.

(2) A State Government may prescribe the conditions subject to which sub-section (1) shall not apply to a driver of a stage carriage performing the functions of a conductor or to a person employed to act as a conductor for a period not exceeding one month.
