Summary

A promissory note, bill of exchange, or cheque is considered dishonoured due to non-payment when the person responsible for paying it—the maker of the note, the acceptor of the bill, or the drawee of the cheque—fails to pay after being properly asked to do so. In simple terms, if the required payment is not made when it is due and demanded, the document is treated as dishonoured.

A promissory note, bill of exchange or cheque is said to be dishonoured by non-payment when the maker of the note, acceptor of the bill or drawee of the cheque makes default in payment upon being duly required to pay the same.
