Summary
When a party brings a witness to court, the questions that party asks the witness are called examination-in-chief. The opposing party then gets to ask the witness questions, which is called cross-examination. After cross-examination, the party who originally called the witness may ask further questions, and this is called re-examination.
Official Text
The examination of a witness by the party who calls him shall be called his examination-in-chief.
Cross-examination: The examination of a witness by the adverse party shall be called his cross-examination.
Re-examination: The examination of a witness, subsequent to the cross-examination by the party who called him, shall be called his re-examination.
