IEA Section 93 — Exclusion of evidence to explain or amend ambiguous document

Summary

If the words in a written document are unclear or incomplete when you read them, you cannot bring in outside facts or information to explain what the document was supposed to mean or to fix the missing parts. The document must be understood as it is written, even if it seems confusing or has errors.

When the language used in a document is, on its face, ambiguous or defective, evidence may not be given of facts which would show its meaning or supply its defects.
