IPC Section 496 — Marriage ceremony fraudulently gone through without lawful marriage

Summary

If a person goes through a wedding ceremony knowing that the ceremony will not result in a lawful marriage, and does so dishonestly or with the intent to deceive, that person commits an offence. The punishment for this offence can be imprisonment for up to seven years, along with a fine.

Official Text

Whoever, dishonestly or with a fraudulent intention, goes through the ceremony of being married, knowing that he is not thereby lawfully married, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to seven years, and shall also be liable to fine.
