Summary
If a cheque has two parallel lines across it, which is called a general crossing, the bank that the cheque is drawn on can only pay the money to another bank, not directly to a person. If the cheque is crossed with the name of a specific bank written between the lines, which is a special crossing, the paying bank can only pay that named bank or that bank's agent for collecting the money.

Where a cheque is crossed generally, the banker on whom it is drawn shall not pay it otherwise than to a banker. Payment of cheque crossed specially.—Where a cheque is crossed specially, the banker on whom it is drawn shall not pay it otherwise than to the banker to whom it is crossed, or his agent for collection.
